DAMERON HOSPITAL ASSOCIA <br />DEPARTMENT: Environmental Services <br />Page 1 of 3 <br />SUBJECT: Removal, Handling, and Disposal of <br />EFFECTIVE DATE: 6/86 <br />Isolation Linen and Trash <br />FILING INSTRUCTIONS: Place in Infection Control <br />REVISION DATE (S) 6/86, 5/98, 6101 LK:mf <br />Binders of Environmental Services and each Nursing <br />Unit <br />APPROVED BY: Environmental Services Director and <br />REVIEW DATE (S): 7195 <br />Infection Control Committee <br />POLICY: <br />Steps will be taken by the Environmental Services staff to prevent cross -contamination between patients <br />during the removal, handling and disposal of isolation linen and niedical (infectious) waste. <br />PROCEDURE: <br />Pick up from patient rooms (in precautions/isolation) and soiled utility rooms, once every 8 hour shift: (Waste is <br />picked up routinely on Shift 1, and checked and picked up as needed on Shift 2). <br />Shift 1 starting at 10:00 a.m. / Shift 2 starting at 8:45 p.m. <br />(Shift 3 on call basis as needed) <br />ITEMS NEEDED: <br />1. Isolation gowns/disposable gloves. <br />2. Infectious waste liners (red with black printing). Infectious soiled linen liners (yellow with red printing). <br />3. Autoclaveable liners. <br />4. Red isolation cart, labeled "infectious waste," which is stored in the outside secured infectious waste holding <br />room (Keep door closed when unattended). <br />STEPS: <br />1. Put isolation gown on in basement, making sure gown is overlapped in back and all your clothing is protected; <br />tie to secure gown. <br />2. Start on 4"' floor, then to 31d floor and 2nd floor, and lastly 1n floor. Take cart and liners up to -the -precautions <br />room and park cart by door of room. <br />3. Referring to the attached summary, determine whether one or two individuals are needed for the pick up. <br />4. For the precautions listed, pick up is completed by one person as per attached summary: <br />a. Precautions as indicated on the door sign will be followed. <br />b. Gloves are worn and changed between each patient room. <br />c. Gloves are removed and hands washed prior to leaving the floor. <br />5. The following types of isolation will require two people to complete the pick up as per attached summary: <br />• Strict (MRSA/VRE) <br />• Contact <br />• Respiratory <br />• A.F.B. <br />
