Continued
a. Notify Environmental Services (EVS) Aide assigned to the area (Shift 1) or Nursing Staff (Shift 2 & 3) that
you are there to pick up isolation linen and trash from the isolation rooms.
b. The EVS Aide/Nursing Staff will put on protective equipment as indicated on the door sign prior to entering
the room. This person will be off the infectious waste and drop it into the autoclaveable liner which is held
open by the second EVS Aide (transport person) outside the room.
c. The transport person will take special precautions when double bagging. The autoclaveable liner is held
open at the top, making sure that the hands never touch the contaminated bag as it is dropped into the
second bag at the doorway (Note: Gloves are worn for added protection, but are removed and hands
washed if contamination is suspected. They are also removed and hands washed prior to leaving the
floor).
d. In the same manner, the soiled linen is dropped into a second yellow liner at the doorway.
e. The transport person then will put bags into the cart.
f. The person in the room will replace liners (supplied by the transport person) into the receptacles, remove
gloves, wash hands and then remove the remainder of the protective equipment (gowns and then mask,
if worn).
6. Take cart down to basement and outside to the infectious waste holding area. Transfer infectious soiled linen
into the cart provided in the holding room. Transfer the infectious waste into the two gray infectious waste carts
provided, which are in the outside secured infectious waste holding room, where they will be prepared for the
sterilizer.
7. Wash cart with germicidal detergent solution.
8. Remove and dispose of gown.
9. Wash hands.
