PUBLIC'kEALTH SER110ES
SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY
ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH DIVISION
Ernest M. Fujimoto, M. D., M.P.H., Acting Health Officer
304 E. Weber Ave., Third Floor • P. O. Box 388 • Stockton, CA 95201-0388
2091468-3420
April 1, 1996
Linda Knowles, R.N., M.S., C.I.C.
Infection Control
Dameron Hospital
525 W. Acacia Street
Stockton, CA 95203
Ms. Knowles,
Thank you for your letter dated March 26, 1996, regarding the Department of Health Services
interpretation of California Health and Safety Code Section 118280. I have received a copy
of that letter from Mr. Michael Schott that clearly identifies your inside storage of medical
waste to be in compliance with the signage requirements. If your medical waste storage areas
are under constant supervision by nursing staff, as described in Mr. Schott's letter, then they
are also in compliance.
As you accurately pointed out, my inspection report requested that you identify the biological
indicator and expiration date on each sterilization report. This was not a requirement as I
explained to Mrs. Parrott, it was simply a request to make my job easier.
You requested a follow up report to verify compliance. This letter serves as the addendum to
my inspection report dated December 6, 1995. Dameron Hospital appears to be in compliance
with the issues discussed above, however, not with Health and Safety Code Section 25090
(c)(2). My inspection report dated December 6, 1995, did not indicate the lack of your
annual sterilizer calibration. This is because it was to be faxed to me once it was found. The
calibration report faxed to me was not performed until after my inspection,. indicating the
sterilizer missed its annual calibration. Please be sure to have the sterilizer calibrated annually
to ensure compliance with the Medical Waste Management Act.
Thank you for your cooperation in meeting all compliance issues. Should you have any
questions regarding this letter, please contact me at (209) 468-3451.
Sincerely,
Kasey Foley
Medical Waste Management Program
A Division of San Joaquin County Health Care Services
