Medical Waste Management Plan <br />' A <br />the container. These containers are picked up by Browning-Ferris Industries (BFI) medical <br />waste hauler for transport to an approved incine?ation facility on a scheduled basis. <br />See Pharmacy Department Policy/Procedure: <br />"Toxic Waste Management." <br />"Cancer Chemotherapy Agents: Safe Handling And Preparation." <br />Pathology Waste <br />All pathology waste will be separated from other medical waste and hazardous wastes <br />(such as fixatives). Waste will be placed in a red bag and deposited into a specially marked <br />secondary container labeled with the words "Pathology Waste" or 'PATH." The container <br />will be stored in the Histology Laboratory until pick-up by BFI medical waste hauler for <br />transport to an approved incineration facility. Unfixed specimens deemed waste shall not <br />be stored for more than 14 days at a temperature above 32 degrees Fahrenheit. Placentas <br />from Obstetrics are stored in the Pathology refrigerator for up top 48 hours when requested <br />by a physician. All other placentas are disposed of as medical waste. <br />See Pathology & Clinical Laboratories Department Policy/Procedure: <br />"Necropsy (Autopsy) & Surgical Pathology Safety." <br />Medical Waste Storage Methods: <br />All medical waste will be collected and stored in the Biohazardous Waste Storage Area until <br />treated by Housekeeping personnel. All biohazardous waste shall be stored, handled, or <br />transported in containers that are leak resistant, have tight fitting covers, and are kept clean <br />and in good repair. This area shall be marked with warning signs saying in English: <br />"CAUTION-BIOHAZARDOUS WASTE STORAGE AREA - <br />UNAUTHORIZED PERSONS KEEP OUT" <br />and in Spanish: <br />"CUIDADO - ZONE RESIDUOUS-BIOLOGICOS PELIGROSOS - <br />PROHIBIDA LA ENTRADA A PERSONAS NO AUTORIZADAS" <br />Biohazard bags and filled sharps containers shall not be stored for more than 7 days at a <br />temperature above 32 degrees Fahrenheit. This 7 day period begins when any waste has <br />been placed in the bag or container for storage purposes. <br />All reusable rigid containers that are used for accumulation, transportation and storage of <br />medical waste shall be washed and decontaminated every time they are emptied, unless the <br />container surfaces have been completely protected from contamination by disposable liners <br />or bags; containers shall be washed and decontaminated when they are visibly soiled. <br />Surfaces are washed and decontaminated with a germicidal detergent solution of A-Phene; <br />0 <br />
