Policy <br /> In order to Drotect the health care worker from exposure to <br /> to infectious agents , appropriate barrier precautions will be <br /> utilized to prevent direct contact with body substances ( nlood , <br /> body fluids , excretion y secretions ) . <br /> II . Procedure <br /> A . Caul. ion will be taken to minimize aerosolization and <br /> splattering of body substances . <br /> B . Gloves will be worn as per existing policy : Wearing <br /> Gloves for Exposure to Blood , Body Fluids , Mucous Membranes <br /> and Mon- Intact Skin . <br /> C . Gowns will be worn where soilage with body substances is <br /> likely to occur . A plastic apron will be worn if the <br /> body substances are in large quantity and are •likely` to <br /> get clothing wet . <br /> D . Masks and eye protection ( safety glasses , goggles ' " '`' <br /> prescription full - rimmed glasses that com.pletelycover,, ' ` <br /> the eyes ) will be worn when aerosolizatioh -or splashes are <br /> likely to occur; these precautions will be taken by <br /> employees performing or : rssistina in invasive procedures <br /> such as G . I . endoscoo,/ , bronchoscopy , endotracheal <br /> intubation , obstetrical and surgical procedures and <br /> suctioning . <br /> E . Pulmonary resuscitation equipment , ,e . g . an` ambu-bag and <br /> oral airway , should be strategically located and availab) e <br /> for use if resuscitation is anticipated . <br /> F . In patient-care areas , spills of blood or uther body <br /> fluids should first be absorbed with paper towels and <br /> discarded , and then the area decontaminated with a <br /> tuberculocidal agent ( Vesphene ) .
