Policy <br /> Sharps will be disposed of in a manner as to <br /> prevent injury to the health care worker. <br /> II . Procedure <br /> A . Sharps will be placed directly into the nearest <br /> sharps container immediately after use . Sharps <br /> -.containers are predominately the Sharpsgard type ; <br /> the " red jugs " are in use in some areas . <br /> 1 . Contaminated needles and syringes should be <br /> placed intact into the container without <br /> recapping , bending , breaking , clipping or <br /> otherwise manipulating the needle . <br /> 2 . Other disposable sharp instruments ( scalpel <br /> blades , etc . ) will also be placed directly <br /> into the nearest sharps container. <br /> 3 . The hub remover on the Sharpsgard module is <br /> to be used to separate needles from vacutainers , <br /> with the needles dropping directly into the <br /> container . <br /> B . Contaminated sharps will be disposed of as infectious <br /> waste . <br /> 1 . The Sharpsgard modules will be checked by House- <br /> keeping on a daily basis . The liners will be <br /> replaced when full ( as needed daily and on call ) . <br /> 2 . When the " red jugs " are full , they will be <br /> closed and disposed of as infectious waste. <br /> D .
