, <br /> C. Gloves. Double gloves are to be worn by those who handle or <br /> dissect unfixed specimens. In addition, when large or bloody spe- <br /> cimens are handled, facial barrier precautions are to be followed. <br /> 3. Type of Specimens (The exterior of all specimen containers shall be <br /> considered contaminated.) <br /> a. Frozen Sections - Gloves shall be worn during frozen sections. <br /> b. Smears - Imprints, cytological smears, bone marrow preparations, <br /> and body fluid smears are considered contaminated until fixed or <br /> stained and covered. <br /> C. Routine Specimens - Routine specimens are to be fixed at the point <br /> of collection. Adequate fixation (volume of fixative) will be <br /> verified upon delivery to pathology or at the time of gross des- <br /> cription. <br /> d. Body Fluids - Body fluids used to prepare smears or blocks are <br /> extremely hazardous. While handling large quantities of these <br /> fluids, protective clothing, gown/apron, double gloves and facial <br /> protection is required. In addition, if the risk of droplet dis- <br /> persal is high, the use of the biological safety cabinet is <br /> required. If available, safety centrifuge cups are to be used <br /> during these procedures. <br /> e. Other - Teeth, calculi , implants and foreign bodies shall be <br /> handled as tissues. Paraffin blocks and covered slides shall not <br /> be considered infectious. <br /> 4. Dkontamination <br /> a. Any spills of blood or body fluids shall be cleaned immediately <br /> with tuberculocidal disinfectant or diluted bleach (1:10 household <br /> bleach). <br /> b. Large spills of formalin (>500 ml ) shall be cleaned immediately <br /> with the appropriate spill cleanup kit. <br /> c. All work surfaces and areas adjacent to the work area shall be <br /> cleaned, decontaminated and flushed with water. <br /> d. All instruments shall be decontaminated and rinsed with water. <br /> Alternatively, disposable instruments and "sharps" shall be dis- <br /> posed of in a puncture-resistant container. <br /> e. All contaminated disposable clothing and supplies shall be handled <br /> as infectious waste. Reusable clothing shall be handled as infec- <br /> tious linen. <br /> f. The cryostat shall be decontaminated with 100% alcohol after each <br /> day of use. <br /> g. The cryostat shall be defrosted, claned of accumulated trimmings <br /> and sections, and decontaminated with a tuberculocidal disinfec- <br /> tant once each month and after tissue with M. tuberculosis is cut. <br /> Gloves and facial protection shall be worn during this cleaning <br /> procedure and extreme care taken when handling the microtome kni- <br /> ves. <br /> 5. Tissue Waste Disposal <br /> a. Fixed anatomical/pathological specimens will be stored in the pri- <br /> mary specimen container within the Histopathology laboratory until <br /> the case has been examined and reported out by the Pathologist. <br /> Page 3 of 5 <br />
