As necessary, specimens will be examined for adequate preservation
and 10% neutral buffered formalin added. Patient case identifying
labels will remain intact on the outside of the containers.
b. Large, unfixed anatomical/pathological specimens will be stored
refrigerated in two, individually-sealed biohazard bags within the
Autopsy Room until the case has been examined and reported out by
the Pathologist. Patient case identifying labels will remain
intact on the external surface of the outermost bag.
c. Accumulated anatomical/pathological specimens will be processed
for disposal once the case(s) is/are completed.
d. Fixed specimens will be separated from the containers and drained
of excess formalin. The combined tissue waste will be placed in
two, individually-sealed biohazard bags. The bagged waste will
then be packaged in a box and securely sealed. Similarly, large,
unfixed, double-bagged anatomical/pathological specimens will be
packaged in a box and securely sealed.
e. Fixed tissue waste will be stored at room temperature in the
designated area and unfixed tissue waste will be stored refriger-
ated prior to final disposition.
f. The exterior of the tissue waste package will be clearly and
distinctly labeled with the following information:
Description of Contents: "Fixed/Unfixed Human Tissue Waste"
c Warning/Precautions: "Potential Biohazard"
Storage: "Room Temperature/Refrigeration"
Current Date: "Today's Date"
Waste Disposal Record Book Box Number: 11
Disposition: "Incineration"
Responsible Party: "Dameron Hospital Pathology Department"
g. The complete tissue waste package will be transported to the
Autopsy Room to await pickup.
h. Accumulated tissue waste for disposal by destruction (incinera-
tion) will be removed from hospital premises on a predetermined
schedule by a contracted service. Only boxed items will be
transported for disposal .
i. At the time of pickup, a department representative will sign and
obtain a copy of the "Hazardous Waste Hauling Record and
Certificate of Destruction." A file of these documents will be
maintained in the Histopathology laboratory.
Section: 1.315 Page 4 of 5
