As necessary, specimens will be examined for adequate preservation <br />and 10% neutral buffered formalin added. Patient case identifying <br />labels will remain intact on the outside of the containers. <br />b. Large, unfixed anatomical/pathological specimens will be stored <br />refrigerated in two, individually -sealed biohazard bags within the <br />Autopsy Room until the case has been examined and reported out by <br />the Pathologist. Patient case identifying labels will remain <br />intact on the external` surface of the outermost bag. <br />C. Accumulated anatomical/pathological specimens will be processed <br />for disposal once the case(s) is/are completed. <br />d. Fixed specimens will be left in their containers and drained of <br />excess formalin. The combined tissue waste will be placed in <br />covered barrels lined with red infectious waste bags. <br />e. Fixed tissue waste will be stored at room temperature in the <br />designated area and unfixed tissue waste will be stored refriger- <br />ated.prior to final disposition. <br />f. Accumulated tissue waste for disposal by destruction (incinera- <br />tion) will be removed from hospital premises on a predetermined <br />schedule by a contracted service. Only barreled items will be <br />transported for disposal. <br />g. At the time of pickup, a department representative will sign and <br />obtain a copy of the "Hazardous Waste Hauling Record and <br />Certificate of Destruction."
