El
C
C
At 11:45 a.m., the sterilizer was closed and the cycle started.
During the San -i -Pak cycle, I kept record of time, temperature,
and pressure (see chart). I inquired of Ms. Ladd and Ms.
Grimaldi when the load would be finished. Ms. Ladd told me
around 12:30 p.m. Ms. Grimaldi said, "No, the cycle takes an
hour, to 12:40 p.m."
I noted the temperature of the sterilizer had not dropped much
below 200°F. I asked Mr. Dakopolos if he had an operating
manual, maintenance records, and written procedure for operating
the San -i -Pak. Mr. Dakopolos didn't know. Later, he returned
with a one page copy stating the temperature in the sterilizer
was to be maintained at 200°F.
The pressure seemed awfully low (less than 11 psi) and I again
inquired of Mr. Dakopolos if he had an operating manual available
or if he knew proper sterilization pressure. No one knew the
proper pressure.
I inquired of Ms. Knowles, "Do you check the temperature (time)
charts regularly?" Ms. Knowles replied, "Yes, we do audit
monthly."
I requested Ms. Knowles to tell me what the markings on the time
temperature chart represented. Ms. Knowles said, "Each outer
section is one hour. No, two hours. "And the inner lines?", I
asked. Ms. Knowles replied, "Sounds like each one is 10 minutes.
No, each line is 5 minutes."
I said, "See this peak? It does not look as though it is holding
sterilization temperature for half an hour." Ms. Knowles said,
"Yes, it is. This is about 1/4 of the two hours and that would
be 30 minutes. We sterilize at 275°F for 30 minutes." Again, I
inquired, "At what pressure?" No answer.
TIME
TEMP
PRESSURE
11:45
2500
8 lbs
12:05
2800
<11 psi <10 outer
pressure
12:30
280°
12:35 260°
12:35 2500 8 lbs
3
REMARKS
Start cycle
Start
sterilization.
Temp. drop begins
end of
sterilization (25
minute cycle)
Blue light comes on
Push bags into
compactor
