Treatment and Disposal of Infectious Waste. <br />(a) Treatment or disposal of infectious waste shall be by one of the following <br />methods: <br />(1) By incineration in a controlled -air multi-chambered incinerator which <br />M <br />vides complete combustion of the waste to carbonized or mineralized ash. <br />ectious waste so rendered noninfectious shall be disposable as nonhazardous <br />waste provided it is not an otherwise hazardous waste. <br />(2) By burial at a Class I or Class Il disposal site, as designated and approved <br />pursuant to Sections 2500 through 2555, Title 23, CAC, except as prohibited by <br />subsections (b) and (c) of this section, by the local health officer. <br />(3) By discharge to sewerage system if the waste is liquid or semiliquid. <br />4)By sterilization by heatinty <br />in a steam sterilizer, or by other sterilization <br />. <br />tee que approved in writing the Department, so as to render the waste <br />noninfectious. Infectious waste so rendered noninfectious shall be disposable as <br />nonhazardous waste provided it is not an otherwise hazardous waste. Operating <br />procedures for steam sterilizers shall include, but not be limited to the follow- <br />ing: <br />(A) Adoption of standard written operating procedures for each steam steril- <br />izer including time, temperature,pressure, type of waste, type of container (s), <br />closure on container (s), pattern of loading, water content, and maximum load <br />quantity. <br />(B) Check of recording and/or indicating thermometers during each com- <br />plete cycle to ensure the attainment of a temperature of 121' C (250` F) for <br />one-half hour or longer, depending on quantity and compaction of the load, in <br />order to achieve sterilization of the entire load. Thermometers shall be checked <br />for calibration at least annually. <br />(C) Use of heat sensitive tape or other device for each container that is <br />processed to indicate the attainment of adequate sterilization conditions. <br />(D) Use of the biological indicator Bacillus stearothermophilus placed at the <br />center of a load processed under standard operating conditions at least monthly <br />to confirm the attainment of adequate sterilization conditions. <br />(E) Maintenance of records of procedures specified in (A), (B) and (D) <br />above for period of not less than one year. <br />(b) Cultures of viable etiologic agents shall be rendered noninfectious <br />before disposal to land by heating the cultures in a steam sterilizer, by incinera- <br />tion or by another sterilization technique approved in writing by the Depart- <br />ment. <br />
