Requirements for Use of GCL Seam
Foothill Landfill Site Improvement Project
Prepared by Lewis Engineering
June 2006
The following procedure will apply if a horizontal GCL seam is needed.
For the Contractor
For C A
1. Horizontal GCL seams shall be installed only as approved by the Engineer after
successful testing.
2. Prior to applying the seam to the GCL of the project, the Contractor shall
submit a test seam for testing. The samples for testing shall be seamed
following the procedures that the Contractor proposes for use in the field.
3. Horizontal GCL seams shall be constructed by overlapping adjacent panels, as
shown in Figure 1, such that the upper panel shingles over the lower panel.
4. Apply a waterproof adhesive (3M -Super 77, or equivalent) to the upslope
portion of the overlap. Heat bond the edge of the down slope panel to prevent
wind uplifting.
The adhesive -bonded seams shall be staggered at least 5 -feet (bottom of one
overlap to the top of the adjacent overlap) so that there are no continuous seams
across multiple panels.
6. Testing: CQA Officer will test the strength of the test seam. After the adhesive
has set, but prior to testing, the GCL shall be saturated under 125 psf normal
stress for 16 hours. After hydration, the specimen shall be tested in a shear
condition with a wide -width tensile testing apparatus.
7. Acceptance: The bonded seam strength shall be no less than 50% of the wide -
width tensile strength of the GCL itself.
