This migration is indicated by the sporadic detection of
combustible gas above the regulatory limit of 5% at one perimeter migration monitoring well, SG -4.
Human health and safety is apparently not threatened at this time. The closest habitable structure
to this well is the on-site residence, which is monitored regularly and where combustible gas is not
detected. The closest property line is approximately 2300 feet north of both the monitoring well and
the edge of refuse, and the land surrounding our property in all directions is open grazing land.
We were most surprised that the landfill gas (LFG) system completed early this year has not
prevented this situation. The site operator reports the presence of a sand lens that extends from
beneath the landfill directly toward SG -4, apparently allowing LFG to move in that direction.
Unfortunately, this information was not available in 2005 when the LFG system was designed.
To prevent further migration through the sand lens, we propose to install another LFG collection
well designed to focus collection on that sand lens, in accordance with the enclosed Plan.
If you have any questions, please call me at 468-8504.
Sincerely,
W.
