All areas of a CVS Pharmacy store (Front Store, Pharmacy and MinuteClinic) may
generate waste items through normal business operations that are regulated as hazardous
waste under state or federal law, These items cannot go into the trash/dumpster or down
the drain. Therefore, these items must be handled In accordance with the CVS Pharmacy
Hazardous Waste Management Program (StrongPak Program).
CV$Pharmacy employs a "reverse distribution" process to return select unsold, damaged,
returned or expired Front Store and Pharmacy items to outside parties for remarketing,
redistribution or return of products to the manufacturer.
Store RF Units indicate when an item can be returned. The RF Unit
will take the condition of the item into account to ensure they are
not transported if they are leaking or otherwise unsafe to transport.
Itis very important to make sure that waste items that could be considered fiazardous are
not combined with the unsold or expired products shipped through reverse distribution.
Failure to identify, segregate and manage these items as hazardous waste could be a
violation of federal or state regulations.
All items that cannot be returned per the RF Unit, and have been determined to be
hazardous waste must be segregated at the store and picked up by a licensed hazardous
waste vendor for transportation to a licensed disposal facility, CVS Pharmacy has retained
a licensed hazardous waste management company, Stericycle (formerly StrongPak), to
provide this service for our stores. Additional information regarding Stericycle is included in
the Supporting Information Section of your EH&S Program Binder.
As discussed previously, CVS Pharmacy may generate potentially hazardous waste due to
the products we sell. The materials in these products exhibit different characteristics or
have specific Ingredients which make them hazardous. All unsaleable items must be
scanned using the RF Unit to determine if the item can be returned or treated as waste,
Based on factors such as item characteristics and vendor instructions, the RF Unit will
determine if the item is returnable or not, or if the item is a hazardous waste.
 .
