. H. KLEINFELDER & ASSOCIATES File No. S-2282-1
February 9, 1978
PAGE FIVE
depth of 6 inches and recompacted. The recommended minimum degree
of recompaction is 90 percent in the building areas and 95 percent
in areas to be covered with paving . These percentages refer to
the maximum dry density as obtained by the ASTM D-1557-70 test
procedure. If any loose or soft pockets of soil are encountered
during this operation, these areas should be overexcavated and
recompacted. The irrigation ditches should be cleaned of all
loose or soft soil, scarified, and recompacted to 90 percent of
the above ASTM test standard. Site preparation in street areas
should conform to San Joaquin County standards .
If any fill is required to bring the site or building pads
to finished grade, we recommend that such fill consist of sandy,
nonexpansive soil having a minimum R-Value of 40 and a maximum
percentage passing the #200 Sieve of 40. In our opinion, the
on-site soils are suitable for use as Engineered Fill. _If import
of fill soil is necessary, we recommend that samples of the
proposed fill soil be submitted to our laboratory for conformance
tests, prior to being hauled to the site .
Engineered Fill should be placed in thin horizontal layers
a maximum of 8 inches in loose thickness and compacted to a
minimum of 90 percent of the referenced dry density.
Foundations
It is our opinion that the proposed residential structures can
be supported on spread and continuous footings bearing on undisturbed
native sandy soil. We recommend that all footings extend a
minimum depth of 12 inches below the lowest adjacent soil subgrade,
interior or exterior, whichever controls . The recommended minimum
width of foundations is 12 inches . With these provisions , the
recommended maximum soil bearing pressures are 1,000 pounds per
square foot for dead load, 1,500 pounds per square foot for dead
plus real live load, and 2, 000 pounds per square foot for the total
of all loads, including wind or seismic forces .
