of a capacity to provide 2500 cu. ft, of air per day per pound of 5 day E. 0. D. The
sludge shall be returned from the settling tank by a positive sludge return pump at an average
of 1001 of the daily flow. The settling tank shall have a detention time of 3.S to 4
hours.
Trash Interceptor
Each plant shall be provided with a trash interceptor of a capacity large enough to
intercept and store large inorganic materials and to provide for grease separation and
storage. The trash interceptor may or may not be provided with an air diffuser depending
upon the design of the plant.
Aeration Compartment
The. aeration compartment shall be made of either 2500 gallon or 3500 gallon tanks
interconnected to provide for a 24-hour detention of the design flow. Each tank shall
have a valve to control the air to that tank. Each aeration tank shall be provided with two
diffusers placed to insure complete mixing of the tank's contents.
(Pir Diffusers and Piping
.J
Each set of air diffusers shall have a 1" galvanized steel drop pipe. The drop pipe
shall be connected to the air header pipe with a slip coupling to permit the easy removal
of the iiffusers. The air diffusers shall be of a fine bubble type and shall be provided
. with an adequate supply of oxygen to treat the sewage load.
Settling Tank
The settling tank shall have a hoppered bottom formed by the sloping of all sides to a
square at the bottom center of the tank. The mixed liquor shall enter the tank through
three 6" cast iron pipes positioned behind a hanging steel baffle. The flow pattern
in the final tank shall be from the bottom of the baffle at a point to p: .vent mixing
of the settling tank contents. The flow pattern shall provide for the continual
settling of the sludge solids and their return to the inlet of the aeration tanks.
The clearified effluent shall flow over a steel weir that provides for a leveling out
—af peak flows. There shall be an automatic skimming device to remove floating materials
