Common Components
Auto Shut Off Valve (ASV): The ASV is a hydraulically actuated valve that closes off the inlet water when the tank
pressure reaches -60% of incoming line pressure. A special 90% option is available for systems with permeate
pumps. There are two common types. U-Turn and Flow Through. The majority of IWP's RO systems utilize the USA
made U-Turn design. Be very careful when replacing the ASV. Be sure to match all of the ports as shown. "IN" is
typically from the pre-filters. "OUT" goes to the inlet of the membrane. "TANK" lines go anywhere after the per-
meate of the membrane.
TANK
TANK
.
IN
\
Check Valve: Most R.O. systems use a check valve on the permeate line out of the membrane to prevent the pressurized
water from the tank back-feeding the membrane. A failed or missing check valve would cause the system to cycle 4friftiS`
on and off constantly and may even damage the membrane. Some check valves are integrated in the membrane or
4144IS
membrane housing, others are integrated into a John Guest or Jaco fitting, others are simple inline checks. Systems
with a permeate pump typically do not require a check valve as the permeate pump acts as a checking device.
Flow Restrictor: Flow restrictors come in many forms. The most common is a "Capillary" style. Corkscrew, inline and
encapsulated all perform the same function. These allow a specified amount of water to go across the
membrane and down the drain so as to build up pressure on the membrane and to prevent it from
fouling. Modern RO membranes like the "Pentek "GRO" use much smaller flow restrictors. Common
sizes range from100 ml/min to over 1000 ml/min.
'Low
41MWINNAVIIIIIIIMIll
iNitalill
, OM
II
Permeate Pump: Permeate Pumps increase traditional RO system efficiencies and allow system to operate at pres-
sures as low as 40 PSI. The storage tank will be filled with more water than a system using an ASV. Most permeate pump
systems do not use an ASV but a 90% ASV is available for applications where infrequent water use is common.
Booster Pump: Booster pumps are used where low pressure is common or consistent performance is required. Not
commonly used or needed in the USA except on larger systems or where TDS exceeds 1500 PSI. If your water pressure
is above 40 PSI and your TDS is below 1500 TDS then a Permeate Pump may be a better solution.
Delivery Pump: Delivery pumps come in many sizes for different applications. Variable speed pumps are popu-
lar when the flow rate will vary. Most applications are well served by a properly sized non variable
pump with an accumulator tank. The accumulator acts as a cushion for the pump so as to mitigate
cycling which can cause excessive wear and tear on the pump.
Storage Tank: A pressurized storage tank is used on most smaller systems in lieu of an atmospheric tank. The
tank allows the water to be distributed without the need for additional pumps or controls. Tanks range in size
from .2 gallon up to 80+ gallons. The actual capacity of the tank varies based on many factors. Air pressure inside the
tanks should be adjusted to -6 PSI for the majority of applications. Air pressure can only be set when the tank is com-
pletely empty of all water. The tanks use a common Schrader valve for adjusting the air pressure.
John Guest, GA Murdock, Parker, legris and Jaco Fittings: Most companies use inferior and far less
mosis systems. We use the John Guest lead free angle stop installation kit in most of our system
costly quick connection fittings. We use only the best fittings available to assemble our Reverse os-
builds, this adds cost but ensures the best installation experience!
6 1 "
rj I
Air Gaps: An air gap between the RO concentrate and the drain may be required. Check your local codes for spe-
cific requirements. We offer many air gaps including faucet integrated, dishwasher style 'rid inline air check. All air
gaps have the potential to leak so Ere i.ire to locate these only where,a leak will drain into an acceptable location.
' a dr' if
Quantum Filtration and UltratViolet: While not required in most applications, it is never a bad idea to add

- 1 v..*...;....- 1101 as...•• le:arwir •
Quantum filtration oran -UltraViolet system on the outlet of the RO.
