GIMP 7
Compost Program Design Considerations
Composting of vegetal materials is conducted using the windrow method.
Materials delivered to the MRF for composting are received on a paved area and are
cleaned. Non -vegetal and undesirable materials are removed. The feedstock is then
ground and formed into windrows that are roughly 300 feet long, ten feet wide and five
feet high at inception. Windrows are located on a cement pad designed to contain process
water for collection in a clay -lined pond.
The following odor minimizing considerations apply:
1. Aeration is achieved by turning the windrows a minimum of five times each
fifteen days. Turning is accomplished using a Scarab® turning machine.
2. Moisture content of the windrows is maintained by testing to insure adequate
levels are extant and moisture is added as needed
3. Feedstock is limited to vegetal materials suitable for composting
4. Airborne emissions monitored and controlled by adding moisture
5. Process water is collected through runoff into a clay -lined pond and is recirculated
for use in adding moisture
6. Personnel are instructed in machine operation and material inspection
7. In the event of extended electrical utility failure, a generator will be made
available to power water pumps as needed
8. All appropriate efforts will be made to minimize the affect of unusual weather
events.
