Compost Program Operating Procedures
The following operating procedures are to be scrupulously observed:
1. Only trained personnel are allowed to operate equipment
2. Feedstock will be sorted, cleaned and ground daily
A u
3. No materials (except for autumn leaves) will remain unprocessed for more than
72 hours
4. Once cleaned, feedstock will be ground using the Jenz® grinder (or equivalent)
and formed into windrows
5. The date that the windrow is completed will be recorded in the Compost Log
6. Once completed, the windrows will be tested for internal temperature at 50 foot
intervals daily and the result will be recorded in the Compost Log. Operators will
insure that internal windrow temperature is equal to or greater than 132° f for a
period of at least 15 consecutive working days, at which point, they will be
considered qualified. Throughout this period, windrows will be monitored to
insure adequate moisture (> 30%) to encourage microbial action is maintained.
Corrective measures will be undertaken to resolve deviance from normal
conditions
7. Windrows will be turned a minimum of five times each fifteen days. The date on
which the windrows are turned will be recorded in the Compost Log
8. The date on which the windrow is qualified will be recorded in the Compost Log
9. Following qualification, the windrow may be screened and the finished product
made ready for sale. The date the windrow is screened will be recorded in the
Compost Log
10. Once screened, no further records need be kept
11. Operating personnel will insure that process water is draining properly
12. Operating personnel will insure that the windrow pad is properly maintained
13. Operating personnel will insure that the process water collection pond is in good
condition and is not subject to overflow
14. Operating personnel will insure that finished goods are shipped on a FIFO basis
and storage piles are maintained properly.
