First aid consists of washing the area around the wound to remove any unabsorbed venom. Keep the victim calm and limit the victim's physical activity. Use a long - handled shovel, heavy equipment or other tools when moving or lifting objects that could be used by nests. Never reach under or behind objects or into other areas where rodents may hide. Look before placing your hands or feet anywhere, and do not put your hands or feet into places you cannot see. Rodents are potential hosts of hantaviruses which can kill humans if infected. Symptoms may include flu-like symptoms such as fever, cough, muscle pain, headache, lethargy two to three weeks after exposure. Hanta virus pulmonary syndrome is characterized by sudden shortness of breath and pulmonary edema. There are no known vaccines for hantavirus. Employees exhibiting the symptoms should seek medical help immediately. The best prevention against hanta virus is to eliminate or minimize contact with rodents. 10.0 ACCIDENT PREVENTION AND SAFE OPERATING PROCEDURES • Before drilling/probing are permitted, underground utilities will be located and marked. • The SSO will hold daily safety briefings at the beginning of each day of site activity. • If site activities interrupt the normal flow of pedestrian or vehicular traffic, appropriate barricades will be erected around the project site. Safety orange work vests will be worn by personnel working within 10 feet of any active roadway or when vehicles or mobile equipment are present onsite. 0 The SSO will ensure that unauthorized personnel do not enter the work zone.
