1

HEAT ILLNESS PREVENTION PLAN

Introduction

This Heat Illness Prevention Plan (“HIPP”) applies to EKI Environment & Water, Inc. (“EKI”)
personnel who work in outdoor areas or on job tasks where the environmental risk factors for
heat illness are present and are, therefore, at risk for developing heat illnesses if they do not
protect themselves appropriately. This HIPP was developed in accordance with California
Occupational Safety and Health Administration (“OSHA”) standards for heat illness prevention (8
CCR 3395).

Scope and Policy

This HIPP includes steps for ensuring drinking water is provided in sufficient amounts,
temperatures and humidity conditions are monitored, shade is available as required by the law,
high heat procedures are followed, employee training is in place, emergency response
procedures are documented, acclimatization of employees is accounted for, and auditing
processes are incorporated to strengthen the plan’s success.

EKI´s employees participating in job tasks where environmental risk factors for heat illness are
present will comply with the procedures in this HIPP and in the Injury and Illness Prevention
Program (“IIPP”). A copy of this HIPP will be made available at each job site.

Access to Water

At all times, EKI employees shall be provided access to potable drinking water, either from an
available and easily accessible continuous source or a portable supply of at least one quart of
water per employee per hour for the entirety of the shift. The water shall be fresh, pure, suitably
cool, and provided to EKI employees free of charge and shall be located as close as practicable to
the areas where EKI employees are working. The EKI Site Safety Officer shall encourage the
frequent drinking of water by EKI employees at the daily health and safety meeting conducted
on Site.

Weather Monitoring

Supervisors will be trained and instructed to check in advance the extended weather forecast.
Weather forecasts can be checked online (e.g., http://www.nws.noaa.gov/), by calling the
National Weather Service phone numbers (San Francisco 831‐656‐1725 (#1)), or by checking the
Weather Channel TV Network. The work schedule will be planned in advance, taking into
consideration whether high temperatures or a heat wave is expected. Routine advance weather
monitoring will take place between the months of May and September; with additional advance
monitoring conducted as needed during the remainder of the year.
