<br />4 <br /> <br /> The importance of immediately reporting to one’s supervisor symptoms or signs of heat <br />illness in themselves or in co‐workers. <br /> <br /> The site procedures for providing first aid to respond to a heat illness, and the emergency <br />procedures in place for contacting medical service providers. <br /> <br />In addition to the training described above, EKI shall provide the following training to all <br />supervising employees: <br /> <br /> The procedures the supervisor should follow to implement the measures described herein to <br />prevent heat illness. <br /> <br /> The procedures the supervisor should follow when an employee exhibits signs or reports <br />symptoms consistent with possible heat illness, including emergency response procedures. <br /> <br /> How to monitor weather reports and how to respond to hot weather advisories. <br /> <br />Other practices that can be implemented on a project‐specific basis to control heat stress hazards <br />include: <br /> <br /> Medical evaluations for field employees to identify risk factors that could make the individual <br />more susceptible to heat illness, and to evaluate medical fitness for duty in hot environments <br />or while wearing protective clothing or respirators. <br /> <br /> Providing electrolyte fluids as needed for extreme heat or work situations. <br /> <br /> Adjusting the time of operations to cooler periods whenever possible. <br /> <br /> Use of mechanical equipment whenever possible in hot environments to reduce physical <br />work load. <br /> <br /> Rotation of personnel in and out of physically‐demanding jobs whenever possible. <br /> <br /> Adjusting the work rate and break schedule according to ambient conditions, workers’ <br />acclimatization, work load, and level of protective clothing/respirators. Unacclimatized <br />workers should start at a lower work rate, and gradually increase each day. <br /> <br /> Performing monitoring as an additional means of hazard assessment and adjusting the <br />work/rest schedule. This may include ambient monitoring (temperature, humidity, solar <br />radiation) and/or worker physiological monitoring. Physiological monitoring may include <br />monitoring of worker body temperature, respiratory rate, or resting heart rates. <br /> <br /> Resting pulse rate monitoring, with subsequent adjustments to the work/rest schedule, <br />should be performed as follows:
