If perched water or groundwater is encountered in the boring, a sample will be collected for
analytical testing. If the boring encounters buried wastes, then following collection of the
sample, the boring will be terminated and abandoned. If the boring does not encounter buried
wastes, it may be advanced to the desired depth.
4.2. Sampling Equipment
The following equipment and materials will be utilized in association with the sampling:
• Hollow stem auger drilling and sampling
equipment
• Track excavator
• Brass sleeves to line sampler
• Teflon sheeting
• Plastic end caps Laboratory -supplied,
TeflonTM'-lined glass sampling jars
• GMI 422 Gas Surveyor Instrument
• Radiation pager
• Chain of custody forms and custody seals
• Daily Field Reports
• GPS
• First aid kit and eye wash
• Mailing labels and markers
• Cooler and ice or blue ice
• Packing and duct tape
• Decontamination equipment (5 -gallon buckets, sprayer, non -phosphate detergent,
disposable brush, paper towels, cotton towels, polyethylene sheeting)
• White spray paint for marking sample locations
• Level C and Level D personal protective equipment
4.3. Sample Handling.
After each sample is collected it will be placed in a laboratory -supplied container, labeled,
logged on the chain -of -custody document, screened for radioactivity, sealed, and stored in a
cooled ice chest. The coolers will be shipped to ExcelChem via overnight Federal Express
shipment.
Pertinent information will be recorded on the sample label with indelible ink and generally
include the following:
• Project name and number.
• Sample date and time sample was collected.
• Sample location (e.g. T-5 @5 feet).
• Recommended analytical testing.
• Preservative used for the sample, if applicable.
• Name/initial of field sampler.
The chain -of -custody (COC) forms will be completed for each sample at the time of collection
and will be maintained through sample delivery to the analytical testing laboratory. The COC
provides a written record that can be used to trace the possession and handling of the samples
from collection through analysis
4-23
