4.4. Decontamination Procedures
Non -disposable and non -dedicated tools, which contact the samples or were introduced into
exploration points will be decontaminated prior to the collection of each sample and between
each sample location. Sampling equipment will be decontaminated adjacent to the exploration
point and/or in a pre -designated area. Disposable equipment intended for one-time use will not
be decontaminated, but will be packaged for appropriate disposal. Personnel who collect
samples will be required to change their gloves between each sampling event.
The following decontamination procedures will be used:
1. non -phosphate detergent and tap -water (bottled water) wash, using a brush, if necessary,
2. tap -water rinse,
3. distilled water rinse.
4.5. Sample Containers and Preservation
Clean, laboratory -supplied, containers will be prided by the analytical testing laboratory and will
not be rinsed prior to sample collection. No preservative will be added to the containers.
4.6. Disposal of Residual Materials
In the process of collecting environmental samples at the Santa Fe Road Disposal Site, the
CIWMB sampling team will generate different types of potentially contaminated investigative -
derived waste (IDW) that may include:
• Used Personal Protective Equipment
• Disposal sampling equipment
• Decontaminated fluids
• Drill cuttings
Used PPE and disposable equipment will be rendered inoperable and will be double bagged
and placed in a municipal refuse dumpster or disposed at a municipal landfill. Decontaminated
fluids such as de -ionized water, nitric acid, and water with non -phosphate detergent that will be
generated during sampling and decontamination of PPE are anticipated to be sufficiently low in
concentration and volume and will be disposed on site in the general area generated. Drill
cuttings generated from boring will be spread out on the surface in close proximity to the
borehole and sufficiently covered with native soils so that the cuttings are not exposed at the
surface. Subsurface materials excavated during trenching will be placed back into the
excavated trench and therefore it is not anticipated that IDW will be generated in association
with this method of exploration.
4.7. Constituents of Potential Concern (COPC)
Based on review of available information, the Santa Fe Road Disposal Sites was initially the site
of a landfill and subsequently the site of illegal dumping where probably some of the wastes
were burned, or partially burned, and some wastes were not burned. The proposed analytical
testing program is based on review of previously prepared documents, site plans, aerial
photographs, and maps and considers the following information.
4-24
