3. Scope of Work
The purpose of this investigation is to characterize and assess the locations (depth and extent)
and types of buried wastes within the study area, referred to as the Santa Fe Road Disposal Sites.
This data will be obtained by performing an intrusive investigation using conventional drilling
methods and trench excavating to evaluate the depths and extent of buried wastes and collecting
representative samples for analytical testing to characterize the wastes. The data will assist with
evaluating remedial alternatives, as applicable, and determining the necessity for additional
cover or reconfiguration of the wastes that may be required to protect human health and the
environment. The CIWMB in conjunction with their environmental consultant Ninyo and Moore
(N&M) will perform the following:
➢ Advance borings and excavate trenches at appropriate locations and depths to
evaluate the extent of buried wastes,
➢ Collect representative burned refuse and soil samples, (samples of solid municipal
waste will not be sampled for analytical testing, as this material consists of
heterogeneous materials such as metal debris, asphalt concrete, and typical household
refuse etc., not conducive to sampling),
➢ Evaluate and summarize data obtained,
➢ Provide appropriate preliminary recommendations regarding site remediation options
(as applicable or required).
Santa Fe Road Disposal Site - Health & Safety Plan 5 October 2002
