The Home Depot
Hazardous Waste Training Records
The Home Depot developed and implemented a comprehensive Handling Hazardous Materials and Waste
(HHM) Program to ensure proper management of hazardous materials and hazardous wastes at its stores.
This document outlines HHM Program roles and responsibilities (including as they relate to job descriptions)
and training class descriptions. Current training completion lists are also available.
HHM Program Roles and Responsibilities
Overview Each and every associate has a responsibility to ensure compliance with
the HHM Program. However, there are special requirements and specific
job duties for certain associates, as described in this section.
The salaried management is, at all times, ultimately responsible for
ensuring safety and compliance with environmental laws in their store.
This responsibility must be satisfied at all times. In appropriate handling of
hazardous materials and waste is a major work rule violation.
All store associates All associates are responsible for recognizing a potential cleanup situation
caused by a spill of hazardous material and reporting it to a Designated
HHM Associate. Associates must:
• Recognize a potential spill of hazardous material
• Isolate the area of the spill, if safe to do so, to avoid contact of other
associates and/or customers with the spilled material
• Immediately report the spill to a Designated HHM Associate
All associates are authorized to perform the above steps related to a spill
in order to protect the customers, associates, environment, and property
from any hazards involving chemicals.
Under no circumstances is a non-designated HHM associate authorized to
use the HHMA system, contact 3E for spill cleanup instructions, or clean
up a spill if a Designated HHM Associate is not present. A non-Designated
HHM associate may assist in the clean up of a spill under the direction and
supervision of the Designated HHM Associate. Any associate may contact
3E to request an SDS.
Designated HHM Designated HHM Associates undergo additional training and are the
associates primary individuals responsible for the HHM Program including the
management of disposal of hazardous materials, spill cleanup, labeling,
and storage processes. Designated HHM Associates include store
managers, salaried managers, hourly key carrying associates, all
department supervisors, and all Receiving associates. Only Department
Supervisors and Salaried managers (that have been through designated
HHM associate training)can complete the HHM Checklist.
