-__ _ Clarifier Weirs
I
f
Clarifier Exit
Clarifier Weir
Weirs should be level when installed, however, algae growth on sections of the weir can cause
portions of the weir to be obstructed, which leads to higher velocities in other areas. The solution
is:
• Keep algae growth from blocking sections of the weir by using a pool brush.
Higher Velocity
himi
i
Clarifier Weir
3.6.3f Management of Waste Activated Sludge
Solids wasting is the pumping of settled sludge from the clarifier to the solids handling tank for
final disposal. This is called Waste Activated Sludge (WAS). If sludge is not wasted, the clarifier
eventually fills up with solids, which will overtime, overflow the weir in the clarifier, and end up
in the filter. Solids in the filter are to be avoided, as it can lead to a plugged filter, excess
backwashes, and a cascading effect that can result in permit violations.
