List the types of medical Waste generated at your facility <br /> • Clinical and other biological waste <br /> • Sharps (needles, syringes, blades etc.) <br /> • Patient care items from rooms or areas in which special isolation precautions have <br /> been utilized <br /> • Pharmaceutical waste—Non-hazardous <br /> • Surgical waste <br /> 2. Estimate the monthly amount of medical waste generated at your facility <br /> • Kaiser Foundation Hospital Manteca generates greater than 200 pounds/month <br /> 3. Describe the medical waste handling procedures utilized by and applicable to <br /> your facility <br /> (a) Onsite location and method for segregation, containment, packaging, labeling, <br /> and collection <br /> Each department is responsible for separating biohazardous waste at the point of <br /> origin. Biohazardous waste will be disposed in containers lined with red biohazard <br /> bags, which meet the 165-gram dropped dart impact resistance test, conspicuously <br /> labeled with the words "Biohazardous Waste" or the international biohazard symbol <br /> and the word 'Biohazard", if red bags are temporarily unavailable, biohazardous <br /> waste will be placed in containers clearly marked on all sides with words " Bio- <br /> Hazardous Waste". <br /> Biohazard bags will be containerized in the following manner: Bags shall be tied to <br /> prevent leakage or expulsion of the contents during all future storage, handling, and <br /> transport. Waste will be stored and transported in a rigid container which is leak <br /> resistant, have tight-fitting covers, and will be kept clean and in good repair. <br /> Containers will be labeled with the words "Biohazardous Waste" or with the <br /> international biohazard symbol and the word "BIOHAZARD" on the lid and on the <br /> sides so as to be visible from any lateral direction. <br /> Reusable rigid containers, which are used to transport medical waste from the <br /> department to the containment area, shall be maintained in a clean and sanitary <br /> manner. The method of decontamination is exposure to hot water of at least 180 <br /> degrees Fahrenheit for a minimum of 15 seconds. <br /> To containerize sharps the following will be done: All sharps will be placed into <br /> sharps containers, full containers will have closed tight lids to preclude loss of <br /> contents upon readiness for disposal, stored sharps containers will not be stored for <br /> Rev Oct 2004 <br /> Prepared By A.Mosher <br /> 1 of 4 <br />
