LODI'MEMORIAL HOSPITAL LABORATORY Aft JULY 1985 <br />1P <br />PROCEDURE FOR PROPER DISPOSAL OF CONTAMINATED MATERIALS <br />For the protection of laboratory personnel, housecleaning personnel, and <br />other persons who may possibly come in contact with contaminated material, <br />all such material shall be properly disposed of in acc6rdance with the <br />following procedures. <br />MEDIA: All contaminated media plates shall be placed In two autoclave bags, <br />one inside the other. (Double bagged) When the bag Is approximately <br />2/3 full, tie supplied with the bags, label with date to be autoclaved <br />(4 days hence) and place bag in garbage can under the right-hand <br />counter on the proper day, using specified autoclaving techniques, <br />20 lbs. pressure, 30 minutes at 121*C. <br />TUBES AND STOPPERS: <br />Blood specimen tubes and stoppers of culture tubes, and all other - <br />tubes -or containers that have or are containing biological material <br />wilt be placed In a double bagged autoclave bag and autoclaved before <br />disposal. <br />NEEDLES: Needles will be placed In a rlgId plastic, pucture-proof container <br />found In the phlebotomist tray. The containers will be labeled with <br />the words "INFECTIOUS WASTE" or with the Biohazard symbol. These <br />containers will be autoclaved before disposal. <br />SYRINGES: Syringes will be placed, after use, in the waste receptacle found <br />In'each phlebotomy tray. These receptacles will In turn be emptied <br />Into an autoclave bag and autoclaved. <br />SLIDES, WET MOUNT MATERIALS, CULTURETTES, SWABS, k4D DISPOSABLE PIPETS <br />- <br />All contaminated materials listed above shall be placed in the dis- <br />posal jar of Amphyl solut'lon. These jars are located - in the hood <br />and on the center and side counters In the bacteriology dept. When <br />the container Is full, place in an autoclave tray In autoclaying room <br />to be sterilized at the earliest convenience of the dishwasher. <br />M11C TRAYS, API STRIPS ,, SPEC; IMEN CONTAINERS, AND MISCIELLANEOUS MATERIALS: <br />These materials are placed In an autoclave tray which has been partially <br />tilied with Amphyl solution. When the day's work Is completed (or the <br />tray will no longer be used for the day) place It on the counter In <br />autoclaving room to be sterilized. <br />-AFS MATERIAL: <br />All materials used with the AFS culturing process are to be placed In <br />an autoclave tray which has been partially filled with Amphyl solution. <br />All tubes, specimens, slides, pipettes and any material which has <br />been In contact with the possible organism shall I be placed In this <br />tray.
