LODI MEMORIAL HOSP <br />INFECTION CONTROL <br />fective: 7/16/85 <br />B/D "RED CONTAINER" <br />DISPOSABLE NEEDLE/SYRINGE & SHARPS CONTAINER <br />DEFINITION: B/D "Red Container" Disposable Needle/Syringe & Sharps container <br />is a leakproof, puncture proof disposal system <br />PURPOSE: To prevent a Health Hazard and injury to the Health Care employee <br />by disposing needles/syringe and sharps at the "point of use". <br />To be used in OR, X -Ray, Pharmacy, Pulmonary Lab, Central Supply, <br />Nursery, Labor Rooms, RR. <br />EQUIPMENT: B/D "Red Box" Container, bracket and lock. <br />,PROCEDURE: <br />1. After mixing medication/given injection, drawing blood or starting <br />or do I.U., the needle and syringe will be discarded in the B/D <br />container. <br />A. Do not.recap needle. <br />B. Do not break needle from hub of syringe. <br />2. If needle must be removed from the hub, i.e., from I.V. tubing, use <br />needle remover on top of each container and twist off needle. <br />JP <br />3. When the B/D "Red Container" is full, snap on lid and throw container <br />in the "Infectious Waste" container. <br />A. Do, not overfill. <br />4. Replace container in bracket and lock. <br />5. Housekeeping will pick up and dispose in the "Infectious Waste" garbage <br />cans. <br />SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS: <br />1. Surgery will change the B/D "Red Container" daily in the Surgical <br />Suites. <br />2. Chemotheraputic Agents Waste -- follow procedure on Cytotoxic Agents <br />Precaution number III.
