Potentially high-risk areas
within the facility include the Clinical & Pathological Laboratories, Plant Operations, Environmental
Services, Central Processing, Materials Management, Oncology, Radiology, Nuclear Medicine, and
Pharmacy. Each of these departments has its own very specific policy on hazardous materials
management.
PROGRAM IMPLEMENTATION.
The successful implementation of this program is dependent upon the integration of multi-
disciplinary functions and management systems that relate to the proper handling and disposal of
hazardous materials and wastes, and includes aspects of public health and environmental
protection. These program components and processes are defined and managed through a series
of facility and departmental policies and procedures monitored by the EC/Safety Committee.
The Hazardous Materials and Waste Management Program includes these important functions:
• Establishing and implementing processes for selecting, handling, storing, transporting, using,
and disposing of hazardous materials and waste from the point of receipt to final disposal
(cradle to grave). Including the management of chemical wastes, chemotheraputic waste,
radioactive waste, and regulated medical or infectious wastes, including sharps, universal
wastes, and pharmaceutical wastes.
• Develop and maintain a written management plan describing the processes it implements to
effectively manage hazardous materials and waste.
• Create and maintain an inventory that identifies hazardous materials and waste used, stored,
or generated using criteria consistent with applicable law and regulation (for example, the
Environmental Protection Agency [EPA] and the Occupational Safety and Health
Administration [OSHA]).
• Provide adequate and appropriate space and equipment for safely handling and storing
hazardous materials and waste.
• Monitor and dispose of hazardous gases and vapors.
• Identify and implement emergency procedures that include the specific precautions,
procedures, and protective equipment used during hazardous materials and waste spills or
exposures.
• Maintain documentation, including required permits, licenses, and adherence to other
regulations.
• Maintain required manifests for handling hazardous materials and waste.
• Properly labels hazardous materials and waste.
• Effectively separates hazardous materials and waste storage and processing areas from other
areas of the facility.
simc 4 Revised 1110
