These hazardous
materials will be further distinguished by means of container labeling as to contents, appropriate
hazard warnings, and manufacturer identity, as required by law.
For each hazardous material used, handled or stored, the department will have a corresponding
Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS). Materials Management will preserve copies of the MSDS
forms, as well as a comprehensive product inventory. A facility wide catalogue of the MSDS
documents will remain readily available to employees at all times and should form the basis for
department -specific training and written precautions and procedures for proper handling, storage,
safe use and emergency action.
Space, Equipment and Storage:
The Safety Officer, in concert with department leaders ensures that space for the management of
hazardous materials and wastes are adequate and equipment is appropriate and used properly.
Hazardous product inventories are stored in a prudent fashion, in closed containers that are
compatible with the substance therein, and in limited, reasonable quantities.
Containers of hazardous substances are labeled, in accordance with applicable law, as to their
contents, appropriate hazard warnings and end -of -use or expiration dates.
Incompatible materials are separated by means of distance or physical barrier (8 CCR 5164).
Where appreciable quantities of hazardous materials or wastes are stored, applied release
prevention measures include diversionary structures, bins, tubs, secondary containment, etc.
Hazardous materials are used and stored under adequate general ventilation or loca`exhaust
ventilation, as indicated.
Flammable liquids should be stored in approved containers that conform to SFM or UL design
specifications. Relatively large quantities of flammable materials (i.e. over 10 gallons) will be
stored in approved cabinets.
Medical waste will be accumulated in designated areas that are identified with the biohazard
symbol and warnings and secured against unauthorized access.
Hazardous wastes are accumulated at or near the point of generation or within a compliant central
area.
Department managers will ensure that appropriate PPE and spill control materials are readily
available for use within close proximity of where hazardous substances are stored, used or
- handled.
Materials that are biologically hazardous due to contamination with blood or other infectious
materials, or otherwise pose a blood bome pathogen risk will be managed pursuant to the Blood
Borne Pathogen Exposure Control Plan, Universal/Standard Precautions and applicable policies
within the Infection Control manual.
simc 5 Revised 1110
