Management of RCRA/Hazardous Pharmaceutical Waste Page 5 of 7
1 . RCRA hazardous waste is to be placed in the black RCRA containers located in designated
areas .
2 . Each RCRA black container placed for collection of eligible waste items will be :
a. Labeled
b . Dated - the date container first placed into use, using a Sharpie, is to be written on RCRA
container label .
C . Closed - the lid to the container should be kept closed except when placing an item into
the container.
d. For suitably equipped containers, utilize the foot pedal to open and close the lid of the RCRA
container. The largest section of the lid should be in the locked position. Listen for the clicks
that indicate it is locked
4 . An absorbent pad should be placed at the bottom of each container .
D . Containment :
1 . Hazardous pharmaceutical waste is to be placed into an available RCRA black container and
the lid closed after each entry of eligible waste items .
2 . The container is maintained in an upright position by a wall mounted cabinet, directly on the
floor or in a movable dolly .
E . Storage :
1 , Hazardous pharmaceutical waste may be accumulated/stored for ninety (90) days from the
date the waste is generated.
2 , Waste accumulation must be able to demonstrate the length of time that the waste has been
accumulated from the date it becomes a waste . This demonstration is made by placing the
waste in the container and marking or labeling the container with the earliest date that any
waste in the container became a waste .
F . Disposal :
1 . Replacement containers for containers which contents are at the fill - line can be obtained by
contacting Environmental Services directly .
2 . Environmental Services staff will retrieve the in-use container, lock it down, place the
provided stickers - "Apply this Seal after Final Closure, Tamper Evident Seal " - to the
lid/container to further secure the container and write date filled on the side of the container in
the space provided using a black Sharpie .
3 . Environmental Services staff will substitute a properly-sized empty container and date
container first placed into use, using a Sharpie , on RCRA container label.
4 . Environmental Services staff will transfer the sealed containers from the departmental area
and place in the storage area designated for hazardous waste .
5 . The contracted hazardous waste hauler will pick up and properly dispose of RCRA waste
periodically from the area designated for hazardous waste accumulation.
G. Transporting
Utilize the proper means (carts, dollies , etc) to transfer or transport materials without causing
breakage or spills — staff will not self-transport hazardous waste off-site .
H . Responding to Releases
All releases from the RCRA black container must be immediately ' contained and any residues must
be properly handled. Handlers at the scene of the release are to follow the SIN protocol only and
take no further action :
S = Safet i first, hast & ^ lit ay `
I = Isolate area and deny entry
N = Notify proper authorities ( Code ORANGE)
SPILL CLEANUP
Step Action
http : //dhaltsOl /policy/policy .nsf/2b0l45f9f8l 80bc28725727600642564/ l a68480abe9cecfl . . . 3 / 18 /2015
