d. Pathology Waste Spills: <br />i. Staff is trained in the safe management of formalin -related spills. <br />fl. Clinical staff maintains all materials required for the safe handling and cleanup of formalin <br />spills, <br />iii. For response to major spills (any medical waste spill beyond the training and equipment <br />capacity of the responder), the department's supervisor shall be contacted immediately. <br />Refer to Code Orange procedure in the Sutter Health Emergency Management Guide. <br />Iv. Employees will report any puncture wounds or similar exposures to their immediate <br />supervisor for possible blood borne pathogen exposures and appropriate follow up. <br />v. Responding staff shall always wear appropriate PPE and wash hands after cleanup. <br />e. Pharmaceutical Waste Spills: <br />i. If a spill occurs, the department is responsible for clean-up. The area should also be wiped <br />dry with towels or other appropriate material. <br />fl. After initial clean-up, perform final cleaning of the contaminated area by wiping up <br />immediately with an approved cleaning disinfectant, which will be .allowed a contact time of <br />no less than 10 minutes. <br />111. Responding staff shall always wear appropriate PPE and wash hands after cleanup. <br />C. Cleaning of medical waste containers for transportation: <br />1. Transport carts and containers will be cleaned. as needed, using an approved disinfectant. <br />D. Handling: <br />1. Waste consists of medical and non-medical waste will be handled as medical waste except as <br />follows: <br />a. Medical Waste mixed with Hazardous Waste will be treated as Hazardous Waste. <br />b. Medical Waste mixed with Radioactive Waste will be treated as Radioactive Waste. <br />c. Medical Waste mixed with Hazardous Waste and Radioactive Waste will be treated as <br />Radioactive Waste. <br />E. Segregation, labeling, Collection/Transportation: <br />1. Segregation: <br />a. All medical waste shall be segregated from other wastes at the point of origin. <br />b. All sharps waste will be placed into rigid leakipuncture resistant red sharps containers. <br />Pharmaceutical waste will be placed into rigid leak/puncture resistant white and blue medical <br />waste containers. <br />c. All biohazardous waste, including sealed full sharps containers (except pharmaceutical and <br />trate chemotherapeutic.wastes) will be segregated at the point of origin and will be placed into <br />disposable red impervious bag conspicuously labeled with the words "BIOHAZARDOUS <br />WASTE" or with the international biohazardous waste symbol and the word "BIOHAZARD."
