All pathology waste containers must be labeled "PATHOLOGY WASTE" or <br />"PATH." <br />5. All trace chemotherapeutic waste containers must be labeled "CHEMOTHERPY <br />WASTE" or "CHEMO." <br />c. Collection <br />1. Environmental services staff shall be responsible for the collection of all medical <br />wastes throughout the facility. ,This collection will take place seven days a week. <br />2. All personnel who handle and/or tramport medical waste will wear appropriate <br />personal protective equipment. <br />3. All medical wastes shall be transported in a rigid container with a lid to the <br />secured medical waste holding area. <br />5. Storage and Handling <br />a. Biohazardous waste, sharps waste, pharmaceutical waste, trace chemotherapy, and <br />pathology waste will be collected, transported and stored separately from all other <br />types of waste. It will be taken to the designated locked storage area. <br />b. Red biohazard bagged waste will be placed for storage, handling and transport in rigid <br />containers with tight fitting lids and appropriate labeling (see paragraph 4.b.2 above). <br />c. The exterior storage area will be clearly marked as follows: <br />"CAUTION—BIOHAZARDOUS WASTE STORAGE AREA — <br />UNAUTHORIZED PERSONS KEEP OUT"; and in Spanish "CUIDADO—ZONA <br />DE RESIDOUS — BIOLOGICOS PELIGROSOS — PROHIBIDA LA ENTRADA <br />A PERSONAS NO AUTHORIZADAS." <br />This warning sign must be readily legible during daylight from a distance of 25 feet. <br />6. Disposal <br />a. All medical waste will be placed into the appropriate, properly labeled, storage <br />container supplied by the contracted licensed medical waste hauler. <br />b. The medical waste hauler will supply the facility with tracking documents that keep <br />the facility informed of the poundage and verification of treatment of the medical <br />waste on a monthly basis. (All records will be maintained for 3 years.) <br />c. Emergency or Backup Treatment Plan <br />1) In the event that the contracted medical waste hauler is not able to respond within <br />seven days in an emergency situation (natural disaster, riot, etc.) contact a backup <br />licensed hauler and the Department of Health Services or appropriate local <br />enforcement agency (county). <br />2) In the event that medical waste is found in the Landfill, solid waste transfer <br />station, or a solid waste materials recovery facility (MRF) it needs to be removed <br />quickly. The following actions will be taken: <br />The Hazardous Materials Coordinator can make arrangements with a <br />registered medical waste transporter to remove the medical waste from the <br />landfill, transfer station, or MRF and ensure that the medical waste is taken <br />to a permitted medical waste transfer station/treatment facility for <br />processing. <br />It should be noted that if the volume of medical waste improperly disposed <br />of at the landfill, transfer station or NW is small enough (less than 20 <br />
