The medical waste <br />once back at the facility will be consolidated for pick-up by the medical <br />waste hauler and sent fox treatment. <br />• <br />If the hospital, or clinic/foundation's LQ14E staff person is going to remove <br />the medical waste from the site, the following items would be needed: <br />i. Appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (e.g. gloves, masks, <br />shoe coverings, protective clothing. <br />ii. Red Bags, clearly marked "Bio -Hazardous Waste" or with the <br />symbol "Biohazard'. <br />iii. Rigid containers with tight fitting lids and appropriate labeling. <br />7. Medical Waste Spills <br />a. Spills from sharps containers should be cleaned up promptly using appropriate <br />personal protective equipment. <br />1) Do not pick up needles or other sharps with hands. Use tongs, a broom and dust <br />mop, etc., to sweep up contents and place in an approved puncture -proof <br />container. <br />2) Remaining blood or other body fluids will be wiped up immediately with <br />approved cleaning solution. Always wash hands after cleanup. <br />b. Spills occurring during transportation throughout the complex or in the storage areas <br />1) Contact immediate supervisor for direction for the cleanup, repackaging, and <br />disposal of the spill. <br />2) Proper personal protective equipment shall be used at all times and spilled <br />contents picked up promptly. Contents will be placed into approved appropriate <br />bag or container for disposal. <br />3) Remaining blood or other body fluids will be wiped up immediately with <br />approved cleaning solution. Always wash hands after cleanup. <br />4) Upon discovering a small leak or tear in a bag, immediately place the damaged <br />bag into another approved bag to avoid further spillage. <br />c. For response to major spills, refer to Hazard Communication Program spill <br />procedures. <br />d. Employees will report any puncture wounds or similar exposures to their immediate <br />supervisor. <br />e. A report of any spill must be made in writing to the department supervisor and <br />Hazardous Materials Coordinator within 24 hours. <br />
