9 of 14
Secondary Containers
Secondary container must be compatible with the chemical. You don't want to use a plastic
bottle for a corrosive material. Or you don't want to use a coffee can or Gatorade bottle.
Let me share an unfortunate accidental death when an employee used a Gatorade
bottle for diesel fuel. He had a very small amount of diesel fuel left and decided to pour
it into a empty Gatorade bottle. He placed the bottle in his truck, picked up his three-
year old grandchild from daycare. The child saw the bottle in the front seat and drank
from it before the employee could stop him. The child was taken to the hospital and
later died from internal bleeding. This is why we discourage the use of non-compliant
chemical containers
The secondary container must be labeled. Let's take a look at the labelling requirements.
Secondary Container Labels
Secondary container labels are required when operations in a work-place setting includes the
transferring of smaller amounts from the original container to a secondary container such as a
beaker, flask, or bottle.
Secondary chemical container requirements:
Product identifier and words, pictures, symbols, or a combination that provide at least
general information about the hazards of the chemicals.
An example of a compliant label under the GHS ruling. There are six required elements:
• Product Identifier
• Manufacturer Information
• Signal Word
• Pictogram
Hazard Statements
• Precautionary Statements
Requirements for workplace labels:
• Employers can create own labeling system that works for their workplace/employees
• Can choose same label required for shipped containers or alternative labels as long as
they provide general information about hazards
• Train employees to understand
2021 Hazard Communication
wesrm+.cwcuivnai.nocesswns
Trainer Guide Example
