JW Enterprises
50 Schooner Hill
Oakland, CA 94618
(415)841-4905
November 19, 1988
Mr. Dan Maglionico, P.E.
Eljumaily and Butler Associates
P.O. Box 593
Orangevale,CA 95662
Subject: Asbestos Air Sampling at Forward Inc. Landfill, Stockton
Dear Mr. Maglionico:
This letter reports on the airborne asbestos sampling conducted
by JW Enterprises and Eljumaily and Butler at the Forward Inc.
landfill, Stockton, California, on October 21, 1988. At that
time, eight ambient air samples were collected at four locations
in close proximity to the active face of the landfill. Sampling
was performed using four Mine Safety Appliance medium -volume
pumps calibrated to two liters per minute sampling rate. The
sampling media were 25 millimeter mixed ester membrane millipore
filters, with 0.8 to 1.2 micron pore size. These were contained
in special cartridges, with filter supports, and connected to the
pumps by tygon tubing and plastic adapters. Each pump was
operated for two hours each for two consecutive sampling periods.
Two samples were collected at each location. The sampler
locations were to the north, west, south, and east of the working
face, with the south sampler being located within approximately
50 feet of the asbestos disposal area, and the other samplers
located within 100 feet of the working face of the disposal area.
The surface winds were approximately 4 to 7 miles per hour from
the northwest during the sampling period.
Samples were submitted to the TMA Norcal Laboratory located in
Richmond, California. TMA is an accredited laboratory for
asbestos testing. Samples were analyzed by NIOSH method 7400,
Phase Contrast Microscopy. The asbestos fiber count for this
sampling event ranged from less than 2600 fibers per filter to
one reading of 3100 fibers per filter. The laboratory report is
attached to this letter report. When air flows are included,
these values represent a range of less than 0.0108 fibers per
cubic centimeter to a single high value of 0.0129 fibers per
