January 30, 1987
Project 116-1.5
will be monitored according to Monitoring Order No. 82-148. California
Water Labs, of Modesto, California, has been authorized to perform ground
water sampling and chemical analyses. The wells will be sampled quarterly.
The ground water level in each well is measured and the wells are pumped to
remove a volume of water equal to five well volumes prior to collecting the
sample.
A positive displacement bladder pump will be used for well purging and'
sampling. All sampling equipment will be thoroughly steam cleaned between
wells to prevent cross contamination.
A new site specific plan for chemical analyses of ground water samples at
the Forward Landfill must be developed since it has been classified as a
RCRA site. The analyses included in the present ground water monitoring
program will be continued, and analyses will be added for all RCRA wastes
that have been accepted at the site. The new monitoring plan will be
included in the Site Closure Plan.
Quality Assurance/Quality Control
Additional Samples
Pump blanks and trip blanks will be used to provide information about
accidental or incidental contamination. Spiked samples will be used to
provide information about accuracy of results. Split samples will be used
to determine reproducibility.
Chain of Custody
A chain of custody record is a legal document that lists all samples
included in one specific shipment. The purpose is to track samples in
terms of those persons taking possesion of the samples from the time of
sampling to their arrival at the laboratory. Each person taking custody
of, or relinquishing samples is responsible for signing and dating the
chain of custody. Upon receipt by the laboratory Sample Custodian, the
"Received for Laboratory" space will be signed and dated. A sample of a
chain of custody record is included in 'California Water Labs, Mandatory
Quality Assurance Programa, p.51.
Sample Preservation and Transport
Samples are collected in appropriate containers with EPA recommended
preseratives. A summary of special sample handling requirements is
included in 'California Water Labs, Mandatory Quality Assurance Programa,
pp.53-54. This table addresses container types, sample size, storage, and
preservation. Samples are transported to the laboratory in ice chests
containing blue ice.
4
