NOV Fiber Glass Systems is the combination of the Star®
Fiberglass product line and the Smith Fibercast® product
lines bringing over 60 years of "Time -Tested" composite pipe
experience to the Petroleum Marketing, Oilfield, Chemical/
Industrial, and Marine and Offshore markets.
LISTING
Red Thread IIA piping systems are Listed to Underwrit-
ers Laboratories Inc. (UL) 971, "Standard for Nonmetallic Under-
ground Piping for Flammable Liquids." The UL 971 Listing for
Red Thread IIA covers all UL identified fuels and applications
and is applicable to both UL and ULC.
PRODUCT
RED THREAD IIA pipe is a filament wound product using
amine -cured epoxy resins and continuous glass filaments with a
resin rich interior surface. The thermosetting properties of the
pipe won't soften or creep at its maximum operating temperature
of 150°F and does not get brittle in temperatures as low as -40°F.
Red Thread IIA is a homogenous product with no liner or blad-
der.
Primary pipe is available in 2" through 4" diameters and
secondary pipe is available in 3" through 6" diameters. The pipe
offers cyclic operating pressure ratings up to 250 psig at 150°F .
FITTINGS
Compatible fittings are manufactured with the same chemi-
cal/temperature capabilities as the pipe. Fittings are compres-
sion molded or filament wound. The primary fittings have the
same pressure rating as the piping; containment fittings are rated
to 50 psig in 3"-4"sizes and 20 psig in 6".
JOINING METHODS
T.A.B.T" (Threaded and Bonded) is the primary joining
method for pipe joints promoting fast, positive make-up and pre-
vents "backout" during curing. The matched taper bell x spigot
joint is the primary joining method for fitting joints. These joints
assist the installer and assures an fast trouble-free installation.
FIELD TAPERING & JOINING
Pipe can be cut and easily retapered for installation in the
field using NOV Fiber Glass Systems tapering tools. Power or
manual tools are available, see Manual 62160, "General Instal-
lation Instructions." Red Thread IIA piping is easy and eco-
nomical to install due to:
2
• Exclusive T.A.B. joint is supplied in primary piping,
• Containment fittings have female threaded inserts,
• Compatible adhesives have no shelf life,
• 2100 Power Tool for end preparation.
RECOMMENDED SERVICES
Red Thread IIA piping systems are UL 971 Listed for all UL
identified applications and fuels, including alcohol and alcohol -
gasoline mixtures of either ethanol or methanol up to and includ-
ing 100%. The piping system is compatible with biodiesel and E85
fuels.
BENEFITS
NOV Fiber Glass Systems is the market leader for under-
ground fuel piping systems with 40 years of continuous supply of
UL Listed products. Red Thread IIA piping is reliable and never
been removed because of fuel incompatibility and is designed to
meet governmental environmental regulations including EPA.
Thirty Year Warranty - With over 40 years proven perfor-
mance in the marketplace, UL 971 Listed RED THREAD IIA pipe,
fittings and adhesive carry a 30 -year warranty. The product is war-
ranted to be free from defects in material and workmanship and
against internal and external corrosion when used for underground
transportation of fuels. The pipe's permeability resistance greatly
exceeds UL allowable permeability as shown in the chart below:
Year
Primary
Secondary
2004 UL 971
1gm/m2/day
4 gm/m2/day
(0.053 gal/100 ft.
(0.213 gal/100 ft.
of 2" pipe 30 days)
of 2" pipe 30 days
1995 UL 971
4 gm/m2/day
24 gm/m2/da
(0.213 gal/100 ft.
(1.278 gal/100 ft.
of 2" pipe 30 days)
of 2" pipe 30 days
Leak Prevention - UL 971 listed DW and SW bonded sump
entry fittings provide positive seal at the sump preventing leaking
of underground fuel in or out of the sump. The DW fitting also pro-
vides Class I protection which complies with California's require-
ment for continuous interstitial monitoring of the piping systems'
secondary containment.
Exceptional Flow Characteristics - Two -Inch pipe has the
largest I.D. (2.235") in the fueling industry allowing the sale of twice
the fuel per foot versus any 11/2" flexible product on the market.
Three-inch pipe has a nominal 3.36" I.D.; four -inch pipe has a 4.36"
I.D.
Secondary Containment - A "true pipe in a pipe" which pro-
vides an interstitial space for complete communication of fluids.
