2. Seismic Hazard
C:\TRICH\Jobs\4515582 Leprino Tracy\Report\Leprino Tracy CalARP 040221.docx 2-5
occur as a result of liquefaction are to buried pipelines. Large ground settlement relative
to the settlement of buildings can result in large strains in the piping connected to the
buildings. Above ground piping is generally flexible and ductile and can accommodate
differential settlement between equipment items mounted on different foundations. The
ammonia refrigeration system does not have any ammonia piping below grade level.
The piping is in general flexible and ductile and can accommodate some degree of
liquefaction.
The site is outside of any areas identified on State of California Seismic Hazard maps as
having a potential for liquefaction (References 13 and 14). To date, the Seismic
Hazards Zonation Program of the CGS has not identified any seismically-induced
liquefaction zones in the City of Tracy. This indicates a very low risk from liquefaction.
California Department of Water Resources indicates that the recent depth to ground
water has been varying between 15 and 20 feet. There is no known potential for land-
sliding or slope failure since the site is on level ground (Reference 14). The site is
determined not to be at risk of liquefaction, lateral spreading or landslides.
Seismic Settlement
Structural design drawings were not available for review; however, it is assumed that the
building walls are supported on continuous strip footings and the interior columns are
supported on isolated spread footings. The equipment is supported on the roof, slab-on-
grade or separate foundations. Although some seismic settlement and differential
settlement may occur, it is not expected to present a significant risk of damage to the
facility.
Tsunamis and Seiches
The site is not located near the ocean or large body of enclosed or semi-enclosed water
and is not in an area designated by CGS as having a tsunami inundation risk. The
nearest body of water, the San Francisco Bay, is located approximately 40 miles from
the site. Therefore, the site is determined not to be at risk of tsunami or seiche.
