AFE TRACKING #:
DATE:
SUBMITTED BY:
EXECUTIVE OVERVIEW
Background:
Justification:
Timeline:
EXEC OVERVIEW (1) Page ____ of ____
The storage freezer in Tracy has severe concerns around ice and frost. Ice and frost build up along the ceiling as well
as the floor of the freezer. This creates a hazard for ice falling on employees, and forklifts or employees slipping and
falling. In April of 2018, we had an OSHA recordable due to an employee slipping in the freezer.
With tech services help we have reviewed how moisture is getting into the freezer, and we will eliminate the ice and
frost issues in the freezer by resolving several known problems.
The entry doors into the freezer allow significant amounts of moist air to flow into the freezer. If you stand at any of
these doorways you can feel and see a cloud of moist, warm air being sucked in. You can also see significant frost and
ice build-up on the ceiling above each of these doors.
Supplement #2 is to install hot gas lines to the heaters. We will tie into existing ammonia hot gas lines nearby for other
equipment to use to the heat on the coils to keep the air for the doors dry.
We need to stop the flow of this air into the freezer. We have tried several things on our own, but nothing has made a
difference. We worked with one of our contractors to correct the issue and they led us to installing HCR doors which
will create a blockage of air flow into and out of the freezer.
Several team members from Tracy viewed these doors in operation at Costco meats in Tracy. Their doors were
installed over 10 years ago, and their freezer freezer was in immaculate condition with zero frost anywhere.
The truck dock side needs to have a double conditioned door so their is an air block on both sides of the freezer. The
rail dock only needs a air block on one side due to having the new high speed doors in place on that side already. The
pallet entry door system needs to be completely replaced with a double conditioned door with a door in the middle of it.
This is the cheaper and more cost effective approach in the long run. The electric heaters will fail more often due to
other components the hot gas coil doesn't need. This can create issues with the doors not functioning.
We would install these at the same time we're doing the door. We need a down day to cut into the ammonia system.
108018207-02
11/27/2018
Ben Schlegelmilch
Storage Freezer Ice Safety Improvements - Supplement 2 Hot Gas Lines
