Landmarc Environmental Systems,LLC Site-Specific Health&Safety Plan(SSHSP) <br /> TRENCHING-EXCAVATION TRENCHING - EXCAVATION SAFETY <br /> PURPOSE AND SCOPE <br /> 1. This procedure is intended to protect personnel from the hazards associated with excavation entry <br /> activities. <br /> 2. This procedure applies to projects where LES controls trenching and excavation activities, and/or <br /> where LES employees are exposed to hazards associated with trenching and excavation activities. <br /> REQUIREMENTS <br /> 1. Competent Person <br /> A. Is responsible for conducting daily inspections of excavation, adjacent areas, and protective <br /> systems prior to each shift. <br /> B. Is responsible for inspection after every rainstorm or other hazard. <br /> C. Must have knowledge of soils and soil classification. <br /> D. Understands design and use of protective systems. <br /> E. Has authority to stop work and take corrective actions when conditions change. <br /> F. Has the ability to recognize and test hazardous atmospheres. <br /> G. Has formal documentation of training as an Excavation Competent Person. <br /> H. Is physically located at the excavation while work is in progress. <br /> 2. Access/Egress <br /> A. Access to trenches or excavations must be available via sloped ramp or ladder. Travel distance <br /> to access must be within 25 feet of the work area. <br /> 3. Soil Classification <br /> A. Soil classifications must be conducted in accordance with prescribed measures; what are they? <br /> B. For the purposes of this standard all soils will be classified by a person meeting the <br /> qualifications of a competent person as described in 29 CFR 1926 subpart P. <br /> C. The competent person shall consult with a Registered Professional Engineer in the event the <br /> soil classification requires additional technical expertise. <br /> 4. Protective Systems <br /> Protect employees in excavations deeper than 4 feet by means of properly designed protective <br /> systems. All protective systems must comply with 29 CFR 1926 Subpart P Appendices B, D, <br /> and E. <br /> A. Sloping and Benching <br /> B. Timber Shoring for Trenches (This Requires Pre-Notification to a Principal in Charge). <br /> C. Timber shoring for trenches must be designed and stamped by a Registered Professional <br /> 12 <br />
