hl Italia Subbotnikova [EH]
From:
Robert McClellon [EH]
Sent:
Tuesday, September 05, 2006 2:41 PM
To:
Natalia Subbotnikova [EH]
Subject:
FW: Passive Soil Vent Plan
This is Jays response.
-----Original Message -----
From: Jay_Kamine@URSCorp.com [mailto:Jay_Kamine@URSCorp.com]
Sent: Friday, September 01, 2006 1:57 PM
To: Robert McClellon [EH]
Cc: Judy McCampbell
Subject: RE: Passive Soil Vent Plan
Robert:
Thank you for your review comments on our work plan to install the passive
soil vapor extraction trench at the World Enterprises site in Stockton,
California in the e-mail message below. The responses to your comments
below were developed based on our discussion on August 29, 2006 and August
31, 2006 and are as follows:
1. The vent pipes will be constructed such that the end of each vent pipe
will be installed at least 10 feet above the ground surface.
2. The top of the vent pipe will either be constructed with slotted or
drilled piping with an end plug.
3. A site health and safety plan is being developed and after it has been
completed, it will be transmitted to you prior to the construction
activities.
4. I understand that the basis for this comment is to prevent any type of
vehicular traffic over the passive soil vapor extraction trench after its
installation to minimize the potential for settlement caused by vehicles
where this settlement may decrease the effectiveness of the passive soil
vapor extraction trench. The overall objective of this project is to
prevent methane from migrating offsite. To achieve this objective, the
soil above the trench will be compacted to minimize migration of methane
through this soil so that methane will migrate towards the passive soil
vapor extraction trench. As soil compaction increases, pore space
decreases. As pore space decreases, methane migration decreases as well as
the potential for settlement decreases. Hence, we feel that vehicular
traffic over the trench will not likely cause a decrease the effectiveness
of the passive soil vapor extraction trench. Since you have this concern,
the trench location will be marked as you suggested with a rope or another
method (as approved by you) to prevent any type of traffic over the trench
after its installation. We recognize that the vent pipes will need to be
protected from vehicles and we plan to install either bollards around each
vent pipe.
5. The site will be posted with the contact information following the
completion of the construction activities.
If I have misunderstood the information provided in our discussion you have
any questions, please let me know. I can be reached either through e-mail
message or by calling me at (916) 679-2081.
Take care,
Jay
