Violence in the Workplace <br /> <br />1.1 Purpose <br /> <br />Acts of Violence, whether threatened, gestured, or carried out shall not be tolerated in <br />the Public Works Department. Anyone witnessing or becoming the subject or victim of <br />such behavior is expected to immediately report to it to the Department for <br />investigation. Minimizing the threat of violence is a duty of all employees to ensure a <br />safe workplace. There are two key sources of violence: <br /> Acts or threats from the public <br /> Acts or threats from San Joaquin County employees. <br /> <br />Acts or Threats from the Public <br /> <br />Threats from the public are to be reported to your immediate supervisor as soon as is <br />practical. Threats include those of physical harm to the employee, family, or property, <br />abusive language directed to the employee, and violent acts. Any employee who is <br />dealing with the public and believes they have been threatened should take the <br />following steps: <br /> Threats involving immediate threats of violence are reported as soon as <br />possible to local law enforcement through use of dialing 911. Such <br />threats include, but may not be limited to the following: <br /> Actual physical assault, <br /> Threats with a weapon or object, and <br /> Oral or written threats in a manner that demonstrates reasonable <br />likelihood of physical harm. <br /> <br />In all cases of threats, immediate or not, take the following steps: <br /> Stay calm and do nothing to increase the level of hostility. <br /> Remove yourself from the immediacy of the threatening individual, and, <br />if possible report the threat to your supervisor. <br /> Should an employee be accosted outside of the workplace they are to <br />report the event, as soon as possible, to local law enforcement. <br /> All acts of violence must be reported to the proper authorities. <br />Retaliation or the threat of retaliation against a person who reports such <br />an incident is unlawful and shall not be tolerated. <br /> All acts of violence or threats of violence are reported to the Director of <br />Human Resources within 24 hours of the threat via fax, email, or the <br />Workplace Violence Incident Report Form (on the HR website).
