San Joaquin County <br />Department of Public Works <br />County of San Joaquin Dept of Public Works IIPP Rev 2020-01-31.docx P a g e | 45 <br />recommendations to the Director concerning how to handle the <br />situation. <br />o Recommendations may involve changes to policy, training, employee <br />counseling and/or disciplinary action depending on the type and <br />severity of incident. <br /> <br />1.6 Training <br /> <br />Public Works employees are trained in the following topics regarding workplace <br />violence, early warning signs, defusing situations, and how to respond. The <br />training is provided at the time of employment and through periodic refresher <br />classes. The County’s Human Resources Division facilitates the training . Training <br />content may include: <br />o Leadership skills for supervisory employees regarding proper handling of <br />incidents, appropriate responses, and reporting responsibilities. <br />o Information for all employees regarding the sources of workplace <br />violence and its result on workplace injuries. <br />o Ways to protect yourself and assist co-workers or others during an <br />incident of workplace violence <br />o Identification of warning signs of employees or others who may become <br />violent. <br />o Effective methods to diffuse a potentially hostile situation that could, if <br />ignored, escalate. <br />o Activation of alarm systems employed to notify others about impending <br />danger. <br />o Reporting requirements and responsibilities. <br />o Emergency response methods should building evacuation be required. <br />o Avoidance of physical contact with the public. <br />o Counseling services available, through the County Employee Assistance <br />Program (EAP), should it be necessary. ). The EAP is an assessment and <br />referral counseling program provided by Mental Health Services. San <br />Joaquin County employees and eligible family members covered by the <br />program are entitled and encouraged to use the confidential counseling <br />services. <br />
