<br />Chemical Storage and Handling <br /> <br />Version #: 2.2 Date Revised: 09/28/2023 Page 1 of 4 <br /> <br /> <br />Purpose <br />To ensure that all chemicals brought into the Corto facility are properly evaluated. The Safety Coordinator must <br />approve all chemicals before bringing them onsite. <br />This policy applies to all departments and contractors. <br /> <br />Definitions <br />Chemical – detergents, sanitizers, lubricants, paints, etc. <br />Requestor – Person requesting approval or removal of a chemical. <br /> <br />Policy <br />General <br />• Facility chemicals must be suitable for use in a food processing environment. <br />• If strong scented products are used proper ventilation must be available. <br />• Labeling and/or identification must be present on all containers. <br />• When repurposing chemical containers e.g., bulk pails, drums, totes, or any container. You must <br />thoroughly clean and properly label the container <br />• Facility chemicals are stored on containment pallets or in chemical cabinets in designated areas (CIP skid, <br />used oil storage), and can only be accessed by authorized personnel via a combination lock code. <br />• All areas must be kept clean and free of obstructions to be accessible in case of emergency. <br />• All food grade lubricants must be stored separate from non-food grade lubricants. <br />• Pesticides and herbicides are prohibited to be used; treatments must be performed by contracted <br />companies only. <br />• Facility chemicals must be allergen free e.g., dairy tree nuts, soy, wheat, fish, shellfish, peanuts, and eggs. <br /> <br />Approval and Removal of Chemicals <br />• No amount of chemical may be brought onto the premises without first following the Procedure for <br />Incoming Chemicals (below). This includes small quantities reserved for “tests” or “sampling”. Only a <br />minimum amount of the chemical will be considered for procurement during the test phase. <br />• Approved chemical list has been generated from the recent Physical Chemical Inventory. These are the <br />only chemicals allowed to be on the premises. Any department wishing to add chemical(s) to the list must <br />follow the procedures outlined in this program. <br />• All Departments must follow this Policy. Failure to do so may result in disciplinary action. <br />• Chemical requested for approval with be resolved within 24 hours. <br />• SDS s are stored digitally on the company J Drive and physically at the guard shack. <br />• The Safety coordinator performs annual audits on SDS files to ensure they are complete and accurate. <br />• Only management may request the purchase or removal of chemicals. <br />• The Safety Coordinator must be advised if chemicals exceed the following quantities. <br />o 500 lbs. of solids <br />o 55 gallons of liquid <br />o 200 cubic feet of gas <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br />
