Hazardous Waste & Universal Waste Management
Large Quantity
Generator (LQG)
≥ 1,000 kg hazardous waste generated during
any calendar month
Small Quantity
Generator (SQG)
< 1,000 kg hazardous waste generated each
calendar month
Very Small
Quantity Generator
(VSQG)
≤ 100 kg hazardous waste generated during
any calendar month – this is a federal category
not recognized in California
Generator Status
Every site that generates hazardous waste must determine its generator status. The RCRA
hazardous waste program identifies three different types of generators: large quantity
generators, LQGs, small quantity generators, SQGs, and very small quantity generators,
VSQGs. California’s hazardous waste program only identifies two different types of
generators: LQGs and SQGs.
A site’s generator status is based on the amount of hazardous waste that is generated at
the site in any calendar month. If during at least one month out of the year the site
generates 1,000 kilograms or more of hazardous waste, the site would be classified as an
LQG. One thousand kilograms is equivalent to 2,200 pounds or 270 gallons. A 55‐gallon
drum of hazardous waste can weigh up to 250 pounds, and a gaylord can weigh up to 1,200
pounds.
If a site generates less than 1,000 kilograms each month, then the site would be classified
as an SQG.
None of the district’s sites generates 1,000 kilograms or more of hazardous waste in any
calendar month, so all of the district’s sites are classified as SQGs.
41
