KN I FE RIVER <br />AN MDU RESOURCES COMPANY <br />HAZARDOUS MATERIALS ANNUAL TRAINING <br />LESSON PLAN <br />1. Hand out written Hazard Communication Program <br />a. Spells out how the company tells its employees about hazardous substances in <br />the workplace. <br />b. An inventory of hazardous substances at each plant Is kept in a loose-leaf binder <br />at the plant. <br />(1) Elk Grove — On the wall of the Drivers' Room <br />(2) Lodi — In the bookshelf <br />(3) Lincoln Street — Under the counter in the store <br />(4) Manteca — On the shelf to the right of the batch room door <br />(5) Tracy— On the desk in the office <br />(6) Amador- On shelf in Safety Mgr. office, loose leaf binder labeled SPCC Plan <br />2. Explain MSDSs <br />a. MSDSs are kept in loose-leaf binders at each plant. They're located at the same place <br />as the hazardous substances inventory. <br />b. There is no standard format for MSDSs. They all look different, but they all have <br />the same information In the same order. <br />(1) The ingredients that make the substance hazardous <br />(2) What happens to people who are exposed to the substance <br />(3) First-aid procedures in case of exposure <br />e. All employees have free access to the MSDS books. <br />3. The truck washing compounds are the most hazardous substances at the plants. <br />a. Acid based <br />b. Rubber gloves and wrap-around safety glasses must be worn. <br />c. All other handling requirements for individual materials may be found on the MSDS <br />sheet for that material. <br />4. Immediately report leaks and spills to your supervisor, the environmental representative, or <br />the plant manager. <br />5. Immediately contain, control and clean up spills of hazardous substances. <br />a. Spill procedures for truck drivers is covered in the Mentor Driver training <br />program. <br />b. Report spill immediately. <br />c. Stop the spread of the substance by using sand or absorbent material. <br />d. Stop the leak: <br />e. Clean up the spill by using sand or absorbent* material to soak it up. <br />f. Petroleum products must be disposed of in a hazardous waste container. <br />g. Admixtures, acid and other non -petroleum products can be disposed of the same as <br />truck washout. <br />6. Evacuation routes are posted at your location. Know the safe evacuation route at your <br />facility. <br />7. Questions and comments <br />
