DEUEL VOCATIONAL IIS T ITUTION
No. 157 - OPERATIONAL PROCEDURE - Medical Waste Management Plan
V. Methods -Continued
Disposable PPE:
0 Domestic or latex gloves.
0 Protective eyewear.
0 Face mask.
0 Gown or plastic apron.
0 Antiseptic towelettes.
Spill Clean -Up Equipment should consist of:
0 Disposable absorbent material such as paper towels;
0 Red Biohazard waste bag for disposal;
0 Appropriate germicidal solution;
• Forceps or other mechanical means for picking up broken
glass and soaked paper towels.
Cleaning and decontaminating spills of blood or body fluids:
1 Put on appropriate PPE, including double gloves, gown,
protective eyewear, and face mask.
2. Control the area. Prevent people from walking through the
affected area and spreading blood or other potentially
infections material.
3. Contain the spill. Cover the spillage with hypochlorite
granules (preset). Use paper towels or other absorbent
materials to cover the spill. Let it sit and soak up.
4. Never touch contaminated spills with your hand. Always use
forceps, plastic scoop, dustpan or other tools to remove any
broken glass or sharp objects from the spill area. Place
these items into a small cardboard box, thick walled plastic
bag, or other container that will prevent puncturing the red
bag (or your hand). Place the contained sharp items in the
bag for disposal. Do not seal bag.
7
